Our vision is an inclusive environment where immigrants and refugees can get the help they need to lead loving and productive lives.

At Gateway Community Services we believe in recognizing and honoring people for all of who they are: their resilience and cultural strengths, as well as their trauma and dislocation. We offer people a path to well-being; supporting them during the journey towards a life filled with love, meaning, connection to community, and independence.

Our non-profit sister organization, Gateway Community Services Maine, is focused on providing deeper support for community members through our Gateway Friends program.  Our current offerings include:

Winter Clothes Closet: Many new immigrant and refugee arrivals are unprepared for our harsh winters and are in great need of warm coats, boots, hats, gloves, and scarves. We have clothes closets at our Portland and Lewiston offices where winter outerwear and boots are available for adults and children.

Community Welcome Center: We offer social spaces for community members at our Portland and Lewiston offices.  Open Friday evenings from 5-10pm, Saturdays and Sundays 10am-10pm, we offer a comfortable space to view sports events, to use computers, and to join in a game of pool.  All free-of-charge! Our on-site community coordinators are available to answer questions and offer resources and referrals to needed services. We are planning to offer weekly social hours for elders.

Citizenship Class: We are offering a citizenship class at our Lewiston office.  The series of 10 classes is held on Saturdays from 12-2. Please contact us to find out more about the class.

Gateway Volunteers: Our volunteers help us keep the Winter Clothes Closet and Welcome Center running! We offer volunteers ongoing support in the form of a six-part workshop series we are developing with the organization Welcoming the Stranger.  This workshop series will offer information and resources to volunteers from a variety of organizations who work with immigrants. Key topic areas to be addressed are: immigration policies and procedures, social services, community safety, mental and physical health, employment and financial literacy.
